Teen Volunteering Opportunities

The library is not accepting volunteer applications at this time. Please check back in December of 2025.

If you attend Ridge High School and are looking to complete your mandatory service hours, please visit this list of other approved locations for an alternate service location.

Below are brief descriptions of volunteer opportunities at Bernards Township Library. Please make sure you are choosing the department right for you when you fill out your application.

Children’s Library: Students in grades 7-12. Volunteers will assist with tasks in the Children's Library, including helping prepare for programs and crafts, emptying the book drop, and other related tasks, depending on need. Time slots vary; our most common programming volunteer slots are 4:15-5:45pm & 6:45-8:15pm, and programs are hosted Monday-Sunday.

General Library: Students in grades 7-12. Must be available Tuesdays, Wednesday, and/or Thursdays from 4:00-6:00pm. Library Helper volunteers will help out with different tasks in the Teen and Adult Libraries; the individual tasks will vary depending on need.

Tech Teens: Students must be in grades 9-12. Volunteers will help patrons as well as library staff with tech related issues, such as downloading apps and helping patrons print, as well as help with tech related programs on an as needed basis. Must be available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm, and/or Saturdays from 12:00-2:00pm.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB): Students in grades 7-12. Teen Advisory Board is a group of teens who participate in and influence the functioning of the Library, especially for teen programming and Library materials. TAB is a forum to have your opinions and suggestions heard. It is also an opportunity for additional volunteer hours.  TAB Meetings are held monthly — look for the next meeting date on our teen events calendar. Teens are invited to join Teen Advisory Board without being part of the volunteer program.

Please direct any questions about the Teen Volunteer Program to our Teen Services Librarian — you can reach Maura in the Teen Room, at mcrouch@bernardslibrary.org , or at 908-204-3031 x5. We do our best to accommodate the needs of all of our teen volunteers, but please be aware the library cannot guarantee volunteers will reach service hour requirements for outside organizations. We have very limited volunteer spots each month and cannot promise regular service opportunities.
